ON NARRATIVE

Dean's work manipulates time and various visual elements, investigating the nature of the narrative structure and then breaking it apart, to be later reassembled by the viewer's personal engagement with the work.
Just as Crowhurst himself played with time and narrative, reworking its structure to his advantage (and eventually his own demise), Dean records a seeming linear narrative and then, via editing, abstraction and projection she recreates narrative structure as a fragile construct. Like her chosen medium of 16mm film, it flickers into view one second, darkness the next, all the while as transient and fragile as a ship lost at sea.
