TIME-BASED MEDIA RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION
Time-Based Media Definition

What is “Time-Based Media”?
- artwork with a specific duration
- art experience over a specific period of time
- may include slides, video, film, live audio, digital media

Documentation of Time-Based Media and Performance Art:
- consider media used
+ still images (slides, digital)
+ moving images (video, film, digital projection)
+ physical objects

- Strategy: carefully note the above elements, as specifically as possible. Also record with still photographs or video if possible.
Create a simulation or representation of the performance with recorded video, audio, stills.

- other elements and hardware
+ performers (how many? Where are they positioned within the space?)
+ equipment (slide projector, film projector, digital projector, audio devices)
+ performance environment (note physical characteristics. How does it influence and inform the work?)

Emulation:
[Problem posed by old, obsolete software & hardware]
Considerations:
- migration strategy to new platforms/media/formats
- single machine (format) vs. network storage
- is data to be streamed or merely stored?
- what file format is best suited to each work? (i.e. TIF or JPG for still images; .mov or .wmv for film/video)
- historical/cultural value of media preservation
- who controls the stored media?
- who owns the copyright?
