TIME-BASED MEDIA RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION
Emulation: Definitions and Strategies

Emulation:
[Problem posed by old, obsolete software & hardware]
Considerations:
- migration strategy to new platforms/media/formats
- single machine (format) vs. network storage
- is data to be streamed or merely stored?
- what file format is best suited to each work? (i.e. TIF or JPG for still images; .mov or .wmv for film/video)
- historical/cultural value of media preservation
- who controls the stored media?
- who owns the copyright?

Emulation Strategies*:
1. Determind specific metadata categories to accurately describe the work.
2. Devise or acquire a tool for the management of this metadata.
3. Establish parameters for addressing copyright issues regarding the archive system and the individual works being archived.
4 . Document the archiving practice.
5 . Develop a strategy for migrating to a new program or system.
6 . Collaboration: Form with other groups and institutions involved in the preservation of performance and time-based art.

*loosely based upon the strategies proposed by Richard Rinehart, "Preserving the Rhizome ArtBase"
