Artist files lawsuit claiming minister distorted his work
When David Wojnarowicz's artwork was exhibited at
Illinois State University earlier this year, some in the campus community were
prepared for criticism because the material displayed dealt with homosexual
issues and society's treatment of individuals with AIDS.
But the
greatest controversy over the exhibit has come nearly three months after it
left ISU, and it did not originate with Twin City residents. Instead, conflict
has surfaced with a Mississippi minister, who

We ought to get rid of mental pollution, too
While Earth Week is fresh in our minds, I would like to
discuss mental pollution. Many can identify environmental garbage, but hide
behind the First Amendment when it comes to printed garbage.
The
liberal syndicated columnists are blasting the Cincinnati grand jury for
indicting a museum for displaying Mappelthorpe's "work." One of his
photographs is a man urinating into the mouth of another man.
Time
magazine commented about some of his pictures, saying "if

Taxpayers must not pay for this kind of artwork
I would like to express my objection to the recent art
exhibits at the Illinois State University Center for the Visual Arts and the
University Galleries.
I am
offended by the sexually explicit display of abnormal sex in the name of art.
Let's call it by its real name: pornography.
The
works of David Wojnarowicz entitled "Tongues of Flame" were recently
displayed in the University Galleries.

Art exhibit was trying to make people think
Dora Vance's comments (Letters, March 7) on the David
Wojnarowitz exhibit "Tongues of Flame" were so ironic that they were
almost amusing.
Wojnarowitz
is directing his work at people such as Ms. Vance who make idiotic remarks like
her suggestion to title the exhibit, "How to Contract AIDS." If this
is all her narrow mind could comprehend from this exhibit, then she must not
have learned much from her education in the field of art.
Wojnarowitz

ISU art exhibit crude, needed accurate title
The recent art exhibit showing the works of David Wojnarowicz
at Illinois State University, titled "Tongues of Flames," was the
worst display of crudely painted artwork I have ever seen.
Having
graduated form ISU as an art and foreign language major, I feel qualified to
express my opinion.
I
understand this exhibit was sponsored with funds from a federal grant. If this
is true, I hope that in the future those in charge of exhibits take the time to
scrutinize and review

`Degenerate' art exhibit creates no complaints
A federally funded art exhibit, branded as "an orgy
of degenerate depravity" by one congressman, has attracted thousands of
viewers but no complaints at Illinois State University.
U.S.
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., is angry that the taxpayer-funded National
Endowment of the Arts has granted $15,000 to finance the ISU showing of
"Tongues of Flame," a collection by New York artist David Wojnarowicz.
Rohrabacher
has circulated a memorandum to his colleagues

But
will it play in Normal?
Surprisingly,
the current retrospective of David Wojnarowicz's work at the Illinois State
